Three places in Cartagena for animal lovers

One of the attractions that enjoy the most ecotourism lovers are the animals, and Cartagena, besides having fascinating stories about colonial times, castles, forts, and beaches, has favorable habitats for the development of the exuberant Colombian fauna and flora.

In this city there are natural parks where locals and tourists interested in wild life can appreciate and interact with them. Therefore, if you are a fan of this kind of experiences, we give you a list with some of the destinations that you must keep in mind for your next trip.

Aviary

Located on the Barú peninsula, The Colombia’s National Aviary is the largest in Latin America and the sixth worldwide. You can reach it by land, crossing the “Campo Elías Terán” bridge; or by sea, arriving at “Playa Blanca” and travelling by foot or by vehicle approximately for eight minutes.

It has over 170 species of wild birds, among them, some threatened or in some danger of extinction. Therefore, this kind of places have a lot of importance, because they seek, trough the pedagogy, a change of attitude of the visitors towards the environment and wildlife conservation.

Among the 2.000 specimens of birds that the Aviary has, the harpy eagle, the Caribbean toucans, the “gallitos de roca”, “paujiles piquiazul”, parakeets, woodpeckers, and flamingos stand out. Vivarium

For reptile lovers there is also a park dedicated to its reproduction and preservation. It is the Vivarium of the Caribbean, located 25 minutes away from the city, on the road that leads to “Bayunca” from “Pontezuela”.

This theme park has educational and entertaining components, divided in several stages in which visitors can learn about the evolutive process of life and the fundamental role of reptiles in the ecosystem, through terrariums, “paludarios”, and dioramas with simulation of marine aquariums.

During the tour you will not only be able to appreciate reptiles such as crocodiles, “babillas”, and snakes, but also fish and amphibians; besides fossil recreations of ancient species.

On the other hand, the interactive phase consists in the possibility of feeding turtles, the “babillas”, and being able to be photographed with pythons. Oceanarium

Returning to the islands, one of the flagship places to visit in the city of Cartagena is the Islas del Rosario Oceanarium, located in the National and Natural Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo National Park, specifically on the San Martín de Pajarales Island.

A place with passive waters in blue and green tones that highlight the tropical beauty of Cartagena. To get there it is necessary either to rent a boat or choose a tour that includes the arrival to the “Isla de Pajarales”.

Once in the Oceanarium, you will be able to watch nurse sharks, many species of seaweed, sponges, sea horses, corals, molluscs, crustaceans, fish, reptile and marine mammals, in their enclosures or through collections, dioramas and informative banners. However, the main attractive of this sea park are the dolphins. Its acrobatics show and the chance to swim next to them is a priceless experience.
