San Felipe Castle: Military fortress full of history

The adventure of visiting the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas is a MUST to know more closely the history of Cartagena. When passing through the city you cannot miss this.

After crossing the Pedro de Herida Bridge, you can see the most important of the military buildings of Cartagena, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a true military fortress built during colonial times, which is preserved in Its splendor.

I paid 17,000 pesos for the ticket that allowed me to enter the tunnels that were strategically located so that the military could defend the city from pirates and enemies who wanted to take the city by assault.

I began my journey along the access ramp, which is built on the back of the castle, with its front is towards Cerro de la Popa, which the guides told me was built to protect the city from the dry land through the Crescent gate.

In the direction of Cerro de la Popa, there is an artillery platform. Its function was to protect the Battery of the Redemption and to communicate the Battery of Santa Barbara with the rest of the Castle.

Following the route going up we arrive at the Battery of the Redemption, from this battery armies could cross fire with all the collateral batteries, obtaining an excellent protection of the rest of the castle.

From this point you can appreciate an excellent landscape and a breeze that invites you to stay in the city.

Conformed by seven cannons, we find the Battery of Santa Barbara that  serves as a protector of the Hill of the Popa.

Located in the eastern part, upon reaching this battery, the tour becomes enchanting, due to the magic and architecture that manages this emblematic place.

Walking a little to the north I found the Hornabeque Battery. Conformed by six embrasures, in which equal numbers of cannons were used.

The batteries served for defense and attack, such as the Battery of the Cross that like the one of San Carlos and the Apostles, are places of a dazzling beauty, its canyons and the structure that they handle give faith of the intelligence that was used to build this fort.

The last of these is the Battery of San Lázaro, located to the south. I was struck by its splendor and the five guns that point towards the Isle of Manga, a perfect place to take a photograph and culminate the tour by this historical jewel.
