Playa Blanca: An earthly paradise

This is Playa Blanca, an "earthly paradise" that offers dreamy postcards with its crystalline, blue and green waters. This place is so magical and unforgettable that it can be compared with world class paradise destinations like Ko Samui in Thailand; Negril in Jamaica or Boulders in South Africa. The praise is warranted because the beach is truly extraordinary.

Getting to this island beach is easy as it is located only 45 minutes from Cartagena and 15 from the Rosario Islands.  Every day boats and catamarans ferry tourists from the Dock of La Bodeguita de Cartagena and this is definitely the most pleasant way to get there, but it can also be reached by land in a private vehicle or by bus.

In this obligatory destination on the island of Baru time seems to stop, there is such a calm that overcomes you there that you might imagine you have the time to do everything: take the sun, bathe, walk with pleasure across that perfect white sand, buy delicious local fruits (mangos, passion fruit, pineapple), Necklaces, bracelets, paddle in a kayak, read a book... And of course, taste the typical local lunch that includes the traditional fried fish, with coconut rice, patacón and salad is available for a minimal cost depending on the fish you choose. And for dessert, cocadas, caballitos, alegrías and other native sweets. In addition, visitors can enjoy exquisite shrimp, octopus and snail cocktails, for 5 thousand pesos (one to two US dollars). Other options for savoring are the delicious fruit salads, bathed with condensed milk. At night you can enjoy the wild, dark, imposing landscape that is a rustic, secluded beach at night.  There are areas lit with candles and torches and music that closes the day to the rhythm of reggae, champeta and salsa.

Watersports

In the Island of Barú, where Playa Blanca is located, offers various water sport activities like kayaking, jet skis, wind surfing, snorkeling, and scuba. LocationPlaya Blanca is located on the island of Baru, 20 minutes from Cartagena. Although all the tickets to get there from the Cartagena town dock include the return fare, in Playa Blanca there is an ample supply of huts at low cost to sleep. They are wooden cabins with palm roofs, sand floors and without electricity. They also offer hammocks for 10,000 pesos and spaces for camping. CavesIn addition to the natural spectacle offered by the sea and the rustic buildings that adorn the shore, Las Cuevas are other attractions of Playa Blanca. The atmosphere inside these caves is damp, but cozy. Through the cracks in the upper part you can see pairs of solar rays escaping through the cracks that lightly shine inside. The caves are an ecosystem of diverse species, terrestrial and amphibious that survive thanks to this environment.

The caves are ideal for exploring and admiring the sea from another perspective.  Because they are on the shorline, in some locations you can explore them while snorkling and it is possible to admire the parade of fish that nest or look for food at the foot of this place. To camp or not to Camp? One super fun plan for Playa Blanca is to camp! An experience for those who like adventure or excursion plans. It’s important to pick a safe location to camp out and there is a police outpost on one end of the beach.  People usually choose to camp in front of this location for the safety it offers at night. Enjoy your trip to Playa Blanca and understand that you should be able to get there on a ferry for about $10 USD and eat lunch for another $10.  So all in, a day at Playa Blanca should be available for around $20 USD.  Of course, there are more expensive options, like a private boat rental which is terrific fun, but can run you over $200 per day.
