At Galerazamba is possible to take a bath in warm, sulfuric waters, and dive in the mineral rich mud from head to toes. This place is 40 minutes away from Cartagena de Indias.
The ideal time to go out and visit this place is at 9:30 am. There is a bus that will take you to Galerazamba, at the rhythm of the typical and warm vallenato.
It takes 45 minutes to arrive, starting from Cartagena de Indias, you will cross a path that borders the sea and connects with the volcano. Once you arrive you will see a wonderful view, it´s a steep hill with a striking landscape, flowering trees, a lake, and in the front the high volcano. There is a guide that will indicate how you need to enter to the volcano of Totumo.
On my experience, we were about 20 people, all from different parts of the world, wanting to enjoy the mud bath. There were more than 30 steps of a rustic wood that lead to the mouth of the Volcano, where we submerged in the mud as often as we wanted. What a wonderful gray substance loaded with minerals!
Some locals who knew the mud therapy perfectly, massaged our body for around 15 minutes and explained us the the health benefits of this mud. First they had to put in the mud, then you have to wait until it dries it in the body, and then go to the lagoon to remove it.
We walked to the "Ciénaga del Totumo", to clean our bodies, with the help of some women from the community who dedicate to give you a bath that finishes the relaxation process. This is how the treatment of the Totumo Volcano works.
After this ecotourism ritual we sat in the typical restaurants that surround the Volcano where we were offered the unique and representative "arepa de huevo", cold coconut water, tropical fruits juices, and the typical lunch. Any of these options are great to taste the local flavors.
Before you leave you can not forget to go through the kiosks where you get the mud, take it home damp or dry. "Take home the jar of mud, I have been selling natural mud for a long time and it really works", said the salesman outside.

SANTA CATALINA DE ALEJANDRÍA
35 km from Cartagena you can find: the Totumo Volcano with curative properties, the Ceibal Park, the complex of coastal lagoons, the salt mines at Galerazamba and its "Cristo de Sal", mangroves, and the beautiful virgin beaches of Lomita Arena. These are all the main tourist attractions of Santa Catalina of Alexandria, 20 minutes from Cartagena, in the limit with the Atlantic ocean. In this land, that was inhabited by the Mocaná and Arawak tribes, was born the emblematic "India Catalina", it was the first slave port of Colombia, and where, in his own house, the General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla was imprisoned for a month and a half.
